Los Angeles (USA) - The shock is still deep! On Tuesday evening (local time) it was announced that "Top Gun" and "Batman Forever" star Val Kilmer had died at the age of 65 . However, the death came as anything but a surprise to his relatives. The actor had been confined to his bed in recent years.

As his daughter Mercedes (33) confirmed to the New York Times, Kilmer succumbed to pneumonia. The Hollywood star suffered from cancer for years and died on Tuesday at his home in Los Angeles.

His last public appearance was six years ago. Kilmer had been leaving his home less and less since 2019. As the celebrity portal TMZ has now reported, he was even confined to his bed in the years before his death.

The 'Willow' actor had been diagnosed with throat cancer many years ago, but claimed to have beaten the cancer in 2017. However, according to TMZ, the treatment debilitated him so much that the 65-year-old had to spend the end of his life completely exhausted in bed.

Kilmer is said not to have suffered a cancer relapse, but his condition got worse and worse, so that his body could no longer defend itself against the pneumonia. His family knew that he did not have long to live.

The 65-year-old leaves behind two children. Mercedes and Jack Kilmer (29) are currently planning their father's funeral. It is not yet known whether this will take place in a small circle or in the public eye.

Incidentally, Val Kilmer made his last - very surprising - film appearance in 2022, when he was briefly seen alongside Tom Cruise (62) in " Top Gun: Maverick " in his old role as "Iceman".
